Description
When you grapple a creature or when you start your turn while grappling a creature you can expend one superiority die to elevate the grapple into a targeted hold that further restricts their body. The creature takes bludgeoning damage equal to your superiority die roll and suffers from the chosen effect below while grappled by you:
- Batter — the grappled creature has disadvantage on Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration on spells.
- Bind — the grappled creature cannot move one of their limbs, preventing use of any items held by that limb: a shield provides no bonuses, a weapon cannot be used to attack, a spell focus cannot be used for material components of spells, and a free hand cannot be used to cast somatic components of spells nor use an object.
- Blind — the grappled creature is Blinded.
- Choke — the grappled creature cannot breath, speak, nor cast spells with verbal components. After their breath runs out, they begin Suffocating.
- Cover — the grappled creature provides you half cover. Attacks that miss you hit the grappled creature instead if the attack roll beats their armor class.
- Deafen — the grappled creature is Deafened.
- Position — when the grappled creature is dealt damage by an attack made by a creature other than you, you can use your reaction to reposition them to increase the damage of the attack. The attacker rolls the damage of their attack twice and the higher result determines the damage the grappled creature takes.
A creature can only suffer from one of these elevated effects at a time unless you are grappling them with more than one free hand.
