Outline: What is the Geminaea Game System?

  1. Preface

D&D Preface from Mike Mearls:

  1. Mike Mearls’ preface opens the Player’s Handbook (2014), on page 4.

Aethyrsparked Game System Preface from Designer Luke Lohden:

  1. The origin story of the Geminaea Game System begins much like that told by Mike Mearls before — Once upon a time, long, long ago, in a realm called Southern California, a group of friends gathered together to forge the friendships, memories, and adventure with the help of Gygax, Mearls, Crawford and company.
  2. We first came together playing Dungeons and Dragons after we met as college freshmen in 2014, right after the new edition’s release and prior to renaissance of increased popularity that blossomed over the following years.
  3. Over those years, we did as Mearls bid us when he said: “D&D is your personal corner of the universe, a place where you have free reign to do as you wish” — and so we did. We created our own personal universe born of our imagination, inspired by our interests, and shaped by the stories we built together around the table.
  4. We found the D&D 5E System to be beautifully flexible as we explored the game and learned the way we wanted to play. The framework provided by fifth edition supports a wide range of customization and adjustment that our playgroup really enjoyed tinkering with and exploring.
  5. After a decade of regular weekly sessions, we had the privilege to dive deep into both the mechanics of the 5E system and the lore of our shared campaign worlds. As we delved, we enjoyed exploring how to increase the variety of available options and weave the game’s mechanics into the narratives we built together. And so the nature of the game adapted with us to a point where it began to feel fundamentally different from the game we began with in 2014.
  6. All of the game’s core components, rules, and features were the same, but the structure of the features available to our characters were far more varied and flexible than we could choose when playing “Vanilla” Dungeons and Dragons 5e. Of course, as any heavily-modified system that’s been slowly evolved over time, the framework becomes complex, contains contradictions, and begin to feel ‘hacky’ at times. Due to those feelings frowing and some areas we struggled to find a happy adjustment for, we considered that perhaps after so long, we’d ‘outgrown’ the system provided by D&D 5e and began to explore other TTRPG systems. After a few forays into a range of options, we repeatedly found it difficult to leave the adjustable framework of 5e behind and were drawn back to it familiarity.
  7. So instead we decided to stick with our tried-and-true foundations in the Dungeons and Dragons 5E rule set, but augment it with a fully realized restructuring of the game’s features and abilities which enables more flexible character building options than those afforded by the fairly rigid system of 5E’s choice of Class & Subclass. This effort was undertaken to polish the game we’d realized together over the past decade so we could continue to enjoy it for years to come and begin to share our cherished world of adventures with more of our friends.
  8. If you’re like us, well-versed in the core rules of Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition, and possess a desire for more flexible character building options which add more ways to enjoy the game we know and love, then we encourage you to give the Geminaea Game System a try!

  12. System Rules (Structural Rules)
  13. Geminaean Creation & the Aethyr
    1. In the beginning, there was the void, an expanse of infinite darkness and stillness. Then, with a burst of unfathomable energy, the Geminaean Universe came into being. Much like the birth of our own cosmos, this event marked the dawn of time and the commencement of a cosmic dance that would shape the destiny of all existence.
    2. Yet, unlike our familiar universe, the world of Geminaea was imbued with this additional force, the remnant chaotic energy of Creation known as Aethyr. From the very moment of creation, Aethyr began to flow through the fabric of reality, interwoven with the very essence of existence. It is a force of imagined possibility, existing alongside the natural elements of the universe, yet transcending them in its boundless potential.
    3. The Aethyr energy flowing through Geminaea is often called ‘The Aethyrweave’ and envisioned as a vast tapestry, instrinsically woven through the threads of time, space, energy, matter, life, and belief. It connects all things, from the smallest atom to the grandest celestial body, binding them together in a harmonious symphony of existence. Those attuned to its power can perceive its subtle influence, harnessing it to manipulate the fundamental aspects of creation itself.
  14. Mortal Souls
    1. In Geminaea there exists a unique phenomenon known as the Mortal Soul. Unlike the transient forms of mortal flesh, the soul is an ethereal essence, intricately intertwined with the very fabric of the Aethyr Weave itself. At the heart of this connection lies the fundamental aspect of creation known as Belief.
    2. Belief, as one of the six core aspects of creation, holds a profound significance in the Geminaean cosmos. It is the catalyst through which the potential of Aethyr is transformed into tangible reality, shaped by the thoughts, dreams, and aspirations of sapient beings. The strands of the Aethyr Weave are drawn in by the power of imagined thought, entwining themselves within the essence of Geminaean mortals.
    3. This entanglement with the Aethyr Weave forms what is commonly referred to as the Aethyr Knot, or simply, the soul. Each individual possesses their own unique Knot, a reflection of their beliefs, experiences, and innermost desires. Though diverse beliefs and philosophies abound across the realms of Geminaea, this common thread of the soul serves as a unifying force, binding all sapient beings together.
  15. The Aethyrsparked & Aethyrflames
    1. Though an Aethyr Knot is possessed by all Geminaeans, some mortals (known as the Aethyrsparked) have undergone a process which ignited the potential of their Aethyr Knot. Unlike a common mortal, whose Aethyr Knot allows them a modicum of magical ability, the Aethyr Knot of an Aethyrsparked mortal becomes an Aethyrflame — a furnace of magical potential which is continuously drawing in and consuming energy from their surrounding Aethyr.
    2. At first, these newfound powers may manifest as little more than the mundane spells wielded by Geminaean common-folk. Yet, with time, dedication, and honing of their innate talents, the Aethyrsparked have the potential to ascend to heights of power and influence reached by few. Throughout history, the Aethyrsparked have played pivotal roles in shaping the course of Geminaea, their extraordinary abilities and indomitable wills leaving an indelible mark on existence.
  16. What is an Aethyrflame?
    1. A Sparked Aethyr Knot is known as an Aethyrflame, named such because it’s behavior is much like the fire which burns within a furnace, though fueled by latent Aethyr energy instead of wood or coal. When not in active use through casting or channeling a spell or Aethyr ability, the flame’s intensity dwindles to a smolder but alights into an inferno when the Aethyrsparked draws from the Aethyrweave around them.
    2. Core Aspects of an Aethyrflame
      1. Though the exact characteristics of one’s Aethyrflame are as unique as each individual, the core aspects of an Aethyrflame as characterized by scholars are its Domain of Aethyr Affinity, the flame’s source of Aethyr Connection, and the technique employed by the Aethersparked to invoke the Aethyr.
      2. Domains of Aethyr Affinity
        1. An Aethyrflame’s Aethyr Affinity determines which types of effects their Aethyr-empowered abilities can have. For example, an Arcane Aethyrsparked can possess psionic abilities but has limited capacity for restorative magic; while a Natural Aethyrsparked can wield the power of the elements and natural restorative power, but lacks access to the more occult and abstract domains of magic. There has never been a case recorded of an Aethyrflame possessing more than one Aethyr Affinity at once, though on occasion an Aethyrflame has been observed changing from one affinity to another. It’s not yet entirely understood why this limitation to Aethyr potential exists, but scholars hypothesize the answer lies within the varying Aethyr energy frequencies of the domains while tradition suggests it is by rule of the divines that mortals’ potential for harnessing Aethyr is limited in this way.
        2. Arcane
          1. Arcane Aethyr Affinity is characterized by its association with the occult, the arcane, and the mysterious. Aethyrflames who possess Arcane Affinity might wield psionic abilities and tap into the raw, untamed energies of the cosmos. Their minds are attuned to the subtle currents of magic, allowing them to manipulate reality with unparalleled finesse.
        3. Divine
          1. Divine Aethyr Affinity is achieved through alignment to one of the domains of the divines, drawing upon the power of higher beings and celestial forces to invoke their Aethyr potential. Aethyrflames with Divine Affinity are often blessed with the ability to channel divine energy, heal the wounded, and smite the wicked. They serve as conduits of divine will, manifesting miracles and wielding holy power to protect the faithful.
        4. Natural
          1. Natural Aethyr Affinity is rooted in the elements, the forces of nature, and the cycle of life and death. Aethyrflames attuned to the Natural Affinity are known to commune with the spirits of the earth, the air, the fire, and the water. They harness the primal forces of creation to shape the world around them, wielding elemental magic and invoking the power of the natural world.
      3. Sources of Aethyr Connection
        1. Another defining characteristic of an Aethyrflame is the source of their Aethyr Connection—the spark that ignites the inferno and shapes the trajectory of their potential. Each Aethyrflame’s origin story is as unique as a fingerprint, yet they often fall into one of four categories: Dedication, Knowledge, Possession, or Suffusion.
          1. You can read the full details and features available to each Source in the Aethyrflame Source Levels Table.
        2. Dedication
          1. Some Aethyrflames are forged through unwavering dedication to a divine domain, devoting themselves to the service of higher purpose. Through solemn oaths and devout action, these individuals channel divine energy and uphold the tenets of their chosen deity, pantheon, philosophy, or conviction.
        3. Knowledge
          1. Others attain their Aethyr Connection through the pursuit of knowledge, delving deep into the mysteries of the Aethyr and unlocking its secrets. These scholars, sages, and arcane researchers harness the power of understanding, wielding Aethyr energy with precision and intellect.
        4. Possession
          1. For some Aethyrflames, their connection to the Aethyr is born from possession—a binding pact with a potent source of Aethyr energy or the acquisition of a mystical artifact. Through these artifacts or pacts, they gain access to vast reservoirs of magical power, drawing strength from their supernatural affiliations.
        5. Suffusion
          1. Others are suffused with Aethyr energy, their very being infused with the raw power of the Aethyr itself. Whether through exposure to Aethyr-rich environments, mysterious rituals, or other arcane phenomena, these individuals become living conduits of Aethyr energy, their bodies and souls suffused with its potent essence.
      4. Techniques of Aethyr Invocation
        1. An Aethyrflame’s Technique defines their approach to harnessing their Aethyr potential, shaping the way they manifest their abilities and interact with the world around them. There are three primary techniques of Aethyr Invocation: Martial, Spellfighter, and Spellcaster.
          1. You can read the full details and features available to each Technique in the Aethyrflame Techniques and Aethyrflame Technique Levels tables.
        2. Martial
          1. Aethyrsparked who follow the Martial Technique are formidable physical combatants, relying on their strength, agility, and martial prowess to overcome challenges. They excel in hand-to-hand combat, weapon mastery, and physical endurance, using their Aethyr potential to enhance their combat abilities and perform extraordinary feats of athleticism.
        3. Spellfighter
          1. Those who embrace the Spellfighter Technique blend martial skill with spellcasting ability, weaving magic into their combat techniques to devastating effect. They often employ a fluid and dynamic fighting style, combining melee or ranged attacks with spells to outmaneuver and outwit their foes. Spellfighters are adept at channeling Aethyr energy into their strikes, imbuing their weapons with magical power and unleashing potent spells in the heat of battle.
        4. Spellcaster
          1. Aethyrsparked who follow the Spellcaster Technique can possess unparalleled mastery over the magical arts, wielding raw Aethyr potential to shape reality according to their will. They are adept at casting spells, manipulating magical energies, and unleashing powerful incantations to achieve a wide range of effects. Spellcasters have access to a vast repertoire of spells and often specialize toward a particular domain allowing them to influence parts of the world around them with incredible versatility and precision.
  17. Who are the Aethyrsparked?
    1. Sparking an Aethyrflame
      1. In the world of Geminaea, the ignition of an Aethyrflame within a mortal being marks a point of transformation, imbuing them with extraordinary abilities to achieve their aspirations. While each Aethyrflame is as unique as the individual who possesses it, there are common abilities and characteristics shared among them, stemming from their heightened connection to the currents of the Aethyrweave.
        1. Aethyrsparked mortals enjoy an enhanced ability for natural healing due to the energies of the Aethyrweave continuously flowing and building up within them. This continuous influx of Aethyr energy allows them to regenerate their bodies more rapidly than ordinary mortals, enabling them to recover from injuries more quickly and with greater efficiency (for example, the healing received from taking a Short or Long Rest). Additionally, it is only the souls of Aethyrsparked mortals that can be revived after mortal death by effects such as Revivify or Raise Dead. The ignited Aethyr Knot within their souls lingers within the mortal plane for a time after death, providing an opportunity for magic to guide the soul back to mortal existence.
      2. Though an Aethyrflame is continuously drawing some energy from the Aethyrweave, in a smoldering state, the amount of energy is small – just enough to prolong the dwindling of the flame. Eventually, an Aethyrflame which has not been engaged by it’s bearer in some time will go out. Once an Aethyrflame has gone out, the mortal bearing it can no longer harness the Aethyrweave’s potential to the same degree they once could until they spark their flame again. This is a transition taken by many Aethyrsparked who no longer to wish to (or no longer need to) live a life threatened by the numerous dangers and challenges that come with harnessing an Aethyrflame.
      3. Despite their unique characteristics, the common thread between all Aethyrsparked individuals is their ability to harness the chaotic potential of Creation to achieve their great aspirations. Whether they choose to wield their powers for good or ill, they are forever bound by the untamed energies of the Aethyrweave, shaping the course of their lives and often the fate of the realm through their actions.
    2. Finding Your Aethyrspark Event
      1. The moment a mortal’s Aethyr Knot is ignited is a defining moment in their life and its circumstances for some are highly personal and unique while for others, it’s a process enshrined in tradition and ceremony.
      2. Given the core aspects of your Aethyrsparked Character’s Aethyrflame, what were the circumstances surrounding the ignition of your spark? Was it planned, or by happen-stance? Was it a sudden ignition-spark or a slowly growing cinder? Why did your Aethyrflame ignite and why do you keep the fire fed? What emotions were you experiencing at the moment your Aethyrflame ignited?

Examples of Aethyrspark Events:

  1. (Suffusion) The Memory in the Roots: Aoife was born from a blossom bud in the Grove of the Ancients, as all Sylvari are, yet her sylvan dreams were unlike the others’. Where most awoke with a chorus of ancestral memories, she dreamed only of a single, unnamed forebear — ancient, mysterious, and incomplete. The absence unsettled her, and the mystery followed her into waking life. As Aoife matured, she became a tender of the Ancestor Grove, spending long hours in meditation among the roots and seedpods, listening for echoes others could not hear. Her attunement to the sylvan cycle deepened, not through sudden revelation, but through years of quiet immersion in the living Aethyr of the forest. When her peers judged her ready, Aoife underwent the ritual of communion within the rootponds of the Pale Tree. As she emerged from the gladepool, new memories flooded her — fragmented truths, unanswered questions, and the vast continuity of sylvari rebirth. In that moment of saturation and awakening, her Aethyr Knot ignited, suffused with the living power of the forest, and her path forward was forever entwined with the roots of what had come before.
  2. (Knowledge) The Scholar’s Revelation: In a long-abandoned spire of the Prismari Institute, a young goblin scholar named Knob pored over dusty tomes and fractured manuscripts, long after his peers had retired to proper halls and proper tutors. He had grown up rough, self-taught, and unwanted — his goblin heritage, lack of classical schooling, and repeated early failures marking him, in the eyes of others, as a student who would never endure. Many were certain he would never graduate the Institute at all. Knob knew that judgment well. It only sharpened his resolve. Night after night, he returned to the spire, piecing together fragments of arcane theory others dismissed as unsalvageable. One evening, as his persistence finally revealed a fundamental truth in the relationship between Aethyr and reality, understanding crystallized with startling clarity. In that moment, his Aethyr Knot ignited — not through brilliance alone, but through hard-won comprehension earned despite every expectation to the contrary. From that night onward, Knob dedicated himself fully to unraveling the secrets of the cosmos, his thirst for knowledge would not be quelled.
  3. (Dedication) The Oath of the Legion: Wulfred grew up on the mean streets of Ravena, the child of a guildless family trying to survive beneath the weight of the city’s power brokers. When his parents could not meet the protection fees demanded by a local gang, they paid with their lives. It was the Argos Legion that investigated the crime, dismantled the unsanctioned operation, and delivered justice where none had seemed possible. That judgment gave a lost boy a purpose. When Wulfred reached the minimum age of enlistment, he fled the orphanage and petitioned the Legion for service, swearing himself to the order that had stood when no one else would. His devotion and discipline carried him swiftly through the ranks, until he was chosen to undertake the Rite of Service and speak the High Oaths before his superiors. As the final words left his mouth, Wulfred’s resolve hardened into something unbreakable. In that moment of absolute commitment, his Aethyr Knot ignited — his Aethyrflame burning bright with conviction, order, and the unwavering will to serve Ravena through the Legion that had given his life meaning.
  4. (Possession) The Fallen Warrior’s Pact: Xulldrin, a drow warrior, fled into the deep caverns with his body broken and his house in ashes. His family had been brought down by a sudden betrayal, and he sought only darkness enough to die unseen. Instead, he found an ancient blade embedded in stone, its surface etched with runes that pulsed like a living heartbeat. As his blood soaked the cavern floor, a presence stirred within the weapon—an Archon of War bound in steel, its will sharp and unyielding. It offered Xulldrin strength in exchange for purpose: to rise, to endure, and to bring retribution upon those who had laid his life and lineage low. With nothing left to lose, Xulldrin grasped the hilt. In that moment, his Aethyr Knot ignited as the Archon’s soul anchored within him, kindling his Aethyrflame through the pact they sealed. He crawled into the abyss a broken man and emerged a harbinger of retribution — bound to vengeance, wielding the wrath of a forgotten god.
  5. The Aethyrsparked Archetypes
    1. Across the diverse cultures and traditions of Geminaea, various methods for harnessing the power of Aethyr have been developed over generations. While these methods have been known by many names throughout history, in the current age, they are standardized into 36 distinct archetypes, each representing a unique combination of Technique, Domain, and Source.
    2. You can read the full list of Aethyrsparked Archetypes here: Aethyrsparked Archetypes
  6. Ability Scores & Skills
    1. The rules around ability scores and skills in the Geminaea Game System are the same as in D&D 5e SRD: https://www.5esrd.com/using-ability-scores
  7. Belongings
    1. When you create an Aethyrsparked character, you receive a standard set of equipment (detailed here: Aethyrsparked Standard Equipment Set) in addition to a choice of:
      1. 3 Weapons
      2. Ammunition (optional)
      3. Armor
      4. Aethyr Focus
      5. 2 Outfits
      6. Gaming Set (optional)
      7. Instrument (optional)
      8. 6 additional consumable items or adventuring gear.

Wealth and Treasure

  1. Common coins come in several different denominations based on the relative worth of the metal from which they are made. The three most common coins are the gold piece (gp), the silver piece (sp), and the copper piece (cp).
  2. With one gold piece, a character can buy a bedroll, 50 feet of good rope, or a goat. A skilled (but not exceptional) artisan can earn one gold piece a day. The gold piece is the standard unit of measure for wealth, even if the coin itself is not commonly used. When merchants discuss deals that involve goods or services worth hundreds or thousands of gold pieces, the transactions don’t usually involve the exchange of individual coins. Rather, the gold piece is a standard measure of value, and the actual exchange is in gold bars, letters of credit, or valuable goods.
  3. One gold piece is worth ten silver pieces, the most prevalent coin among commoners. A silver piece buys a laborer’s work for half a day, a flask of lamp oil, or a night’s rest in a poor inn.
  4. One silver piece is worth ten copper pieces, which are common among laborers and beggars. A single copper piece buys a candle, a torch, or a piece of chalk.
  5. In addition, unusual coins made of other precious metals sometimes appear in treasure hoards. The electrum piece (ep) and the platinum piece (pp) originate from fallen empires and lost kingdoms, and they sometimes arouse suspicion and skepticism when used in transactions. An electrum piece is worth five silver pieces, and a platinum piece is worth ten gold pieces.
  6. A standard coin weighs about a third of an ounce, so fifty coins weigh a pound.

  1. You can read the full details on Wealth and Treasure from the D&D 5e SRD: https://www.5esrd.com/equipment
  2. All of the items an Aethyrsparked mortal might obtain or equip themselves with can be found in the Items table.
  3. Background
    1. Choosing a background provides you with important story cues about your character’s identity. The most important question to ask about your background is what changed? Why did you stop doing whatever your background describes and become an Aethyrsparked? Where did you get the money to purchase your starting gear, or, if you come from a wealthy background, why don’t you have more money? How did you learn the skills of your class? What sets you apart from unsparked mortals who share your background?
      1. You can read the full list of backgrounds in the Vocations (Backgrounds) table.
  4. Persona
    1. To further help you understand your character’s personality and approach to their world, you can build a persona for them. A Persona is a collection of attributes that describe beliefs, characteristics, and approaches to life. The components of a character’s Persona are their Values, Axioms, Traits, Relationships, and Challenges.
      1. Values
        1. Values are deeply held beliefs or principles that guide a character’s actions and decisions.
      2. Axioms
        1. An axiom is a statement or proposition that the character regards as self-evidently true. It serves as a guiding principle for the character’s beliefs and behaviors.
      3. Traits
        1. These are distinguishing qualities or characteristics that are the embodiment of an individual’s unique personal nature.
      4. Relationships
        1. These indicate the nature of the relationship with other characters, family, friends, or organizations.
      5. Challenges
        1. These are obstacles or conflicts—either internal or external—that add depth and conflict to the character’s life.
  5. Aethyr Points, Aspirations, and Intensity Levels
    1. As one harnesses the potential of the Aethyr, the intensity their Aethyrflame grows, enabling them to wield greater quantities of magical power and create more potent effects. This accumulation of concentrated Aethyr can be measured within the bodies of Aethyrsparked mortals and is quantified as Aethyr Points.
    2. Aethyr Points are gained when an Aethyrsparked mortal engages with the Aethyrweave to overcome significant challenges and achieve milestones in the aspirations which motivate them to wield the power of the Aethyr.
      1. You can read all of the ways Aethyr Points are gained here: Acquiring Aethyr Points
    3. Once you have acquired a certain number of Aethyr Points, your character’s overall power level and capabilities increase and they gain additional features. There are 20 levels of Aethyr Flame Intensity and you can read the full details here: Aethyrflame Intensity Levels
  6. Aethyrflame Features
    1. In addition to causing your character to level up to higher intensity levels, your accumulated Aethyr Points can also be spent on unique features which improve your character’s capabilities and enable them to specialize to overcome particular challenges.
    2. These are additional features an Aethyrsoul can obtain by expending their Aethyrpoints when they undergo an Aethyrflame Rejuvenation (completing a Long Rest). Some features are instead granted automatically by an Aethyrsoul’s technique or source.
    3. Aethyrflame Ability - Some features will refer to your Aethyrflame Ability Modifier and Aethyrflame Spell Save DC. When your Aethyrflame is sparked (at level 1), you select from either Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. The chosen ability is your Aethyrflame Ability and it determines your modifier. Your Aethyrflame Spell Save DC is equal to 8 plus your proficiency bonus plus your Aethyrflame Ability Modifier.
    4. Unless otherwise noted, an Aethyrflame Feature can only be obtained once and only by Aethyrsouls with the required Technique, Source, and/or Affinity (where applicable). Several features also have a specific Aethyrflame Intensity level and/or another Aethyrflame Feature as a prerequisite.
      1. Source exceptions: Aethyrsouls with the Suffusion source can obtain Bodily Improvement features, and those with the Dedication source can obtain Aura features, whatever their Technique. The features’ Source, Affinity, level and prerequisite requirements still apply.
      2. How features are obtained: Technique and Source features are granted automatically and can’t be bought, including the features your Source’s focus grants (a Dedication’s tier I, II and III features, and the boon chosen for Possession’s Acquired Boon). Some technique and source features grant free picks of a given kind; Bodily Improvement features and Combat Superiority can only be obtained with one. Every other feature is bought with Aethyr Points. See How features are obtained.
      3. You can browse the full set of features that can be obtained by expending Aethyr Points here: Aethyrflame Features
