Sapience

Sapience is the capacity for thought, imagination and self-awareness that sets mortal peoples apart from simple beasts. In Geminaea it is closely bound to Aethyr. The minds of sapient beings are tied to the Aethyrweave, and their collective belief has shaped reality itself, giving rise to the gods and to other magical entities.

The Proma are held to be the first sapient beings of Geminaea, likely influenced by Aethyr from their beginning. Accounts of divine origins describe how creatures steeped in the magic of the land grew more complex over the ages until intelligent beings emerged, built societies and began to ask what forces ruled their world. Their belief gave form to the first gods.

After the Rending, sapience returned to the two planets in different ways. On Aradaea, peoples of shared ancestry rose again. On Vitaea, the Sylvari sensed this through their collective dreams and began the Great Awakening, raising many beasts to sapience as the Animalfolk.

The peoples who share this gift, and the heritages they belong to, are described under Sapient Beings and Heritages (Races).
