Enchanting

Enchanting is the art of binding Aethyr into an object so that it holds its magic after the enchanter walks away. It is how the weapons, armor and wonders of the Magic Item Compendium are made, and its raw material is Lyrium, the solid crystal form of Aethyr, which crafters use to make magical artifacts and lay enchantments.

Geminaea has several ways to enchant:

An enchanting check binds the magic at the end of a piece of enchanting work. It is an Intelligence check using the tool the work calls for (see Crafting Magical Items) or Aethyrcrafting Tools, adding your proficiency bonus if you’re proficient with the tool. The DC depends on the item’s rarity, which also sets its spell level when no spell decides it:

Rarity DC Spell level
Common 10 1
Uncommon 15 3
Rare 20 5
Very Rare 25 8
Legendary 30 9

An item that holds or reproduces a spell uses that spell’s level instead, if it is higher. If you fail an enchanting check by 5 or more, the Aethyr you were binding breaks loose: the GM calls for a surge check with a Surge Charge equal to the item’s spell level. The rule that sent you here says what else a failure costs.

Runesmithing is the inscribing of runes of power into magical stone, crystal, metal, wood or bone, each drawing its energy from the Aethyrweave. Its rules are set out in the Runesmith feature and the features that build on it.

  • Becoming a Runesmith. Characters with the Possession source gain Runesmith by choosing Acquired Boon - Artifact at level 1. The boon also lets them identify, extract and recharge the artifact runes they find across Geminaea.
  • Creating runes. A Runesmith creates runes by inscribing them into magical materials, shaping the rune’s effect as they do (Runesmith). Runes can also be found as lost relics or in the hands of other runesmiths.
  • Affixing runes. A Runesmith can affix a rune to a weapon, armor or other item over the course of a short rest, with no check needed. Each rune’s entry in the table below gives the base benefits it grants: the item becomes magical and requires attunement, its damage counts as magical, it resists normal wear, it resizes to fit the attuned creature, and that creature can summon it to their hand as a bonus action. The rune’s own effects grow as the attuned creature reaches Aethyrflame Intensity levels 7 and 13.
  • Gaining more runes. Greater Boons II at level 13 and Ultimate Boons at level 19 each give an Artifact Enchantment Rune of your choice to characters who chose the Artifact boon.

Most creatures with an Aethyrflame can attune to only one rune-bound item, and a new Runesmith can affix only one rune to an item. The Runic Binding features raise both limits:

Intensity level Feature Runes per item Rune-bound items you can attune to
1 Runesmith 1 1
4 Runic Binding I 2 2
10 Runic Binding II 2 3

The Infuse Item feature lets its owner imbue an ordinary object with one of a set of infusions at the end of a long rest, making it a magic item at once and without an enchanting check. Infused items are prototypes: the infusion lasts until its creator replaces it, and vanishes a few days after the creator dies. Related features, such as Magic Item Adept, make their owners better at crafting lasting items too.

Small, short-lived enchantments need no check:

  • The Mystic Crafting vocation feature imbues a simple object with a minor magical property, such as a glow or a float, for an hour.
  • Spells that enchant a weapon or object for their duration work as described.

Lasting bonuses and aspects, such as Enchanted +1 or Flaming, are made by crafting a magical item; see Magical Item Archetypes for the common kinds.
