Aethyr Point Awards
Characters advance by earning Aethyr Points, which raise their Aethyrflame Intensity. There are no experience points. This page restates the Aethyr Point rules from the GM’s side; where the two differ, that page is the rule.
Encounters
Section titled “Encounters”- Every encounter the party completes gives each character at least 1 Aethyr Point.
- Up to 3 per character for one encounter. Award more for a hard challenge, ingenuity in overcoming it, or its importance to the story.
- Long encounters. An encounter that takes longer because of its scale can give about 1 more point per extra hour of play, still within the limit of 3. Time spent reviewing rules, planning or on downtime logistics doesn’t count.
With about three encounters a session, characters earn 3 to 9 points a session from encounters, around 4.5 on average.
Aspirations
Section titled “Aspirations”- Completing an aspiration gives the character 5 Aethyr Points, at most once every 5 days. Characters who share an aspiration each get the full 5 when they complete it together.
- Committing to a new aspiration gives 1 point, after an hour-long ritual. Switching an aspiration for another, by the same ritual, gives none.
- A character holds up to 3 aspirations at a time. One they’ve dropped can still be completed, but gives no points.
Expect roughly one aspiration completed per character every five sessions: about 1 point a session on average.
Player-Given Boon Points
Section titled “Player-Given Boon Points”At the end of each session, each player can give another player’s character an Aethyr Point for any reason they choose. The GM awards two Aethyr Points to two players’ characters. Characters average about 1.5 points a session from boons.
Pacing
Section titled “Pacing”A typical session gives each character 4 to 16 Aethyr Points, 6 on average: roughly 1 point per hour of play, plus aspirations and boons. At 6 points a session, characters reach each Aethyrflame Intensity level after about this many sessions:
| Intensity level | Aethyr Points in total | Sessions, approximately |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 | Start |
| 2 | 20 | 3 |
| 3 | 40 | 7 |
| 4 | 70 | 12 |
| 5 | 100 | 17 |
| 6 | 140 | 23 |
| 7 | 180 | 30 |
| 8 | 220 | 37 |
| 9 | 260 | 43 |
| 10 | 310 | 52 |
| 11 | 360 | 60 |
| 12 | 410 | 68 |
| 13 | 460 | 77 |
| 14 | 520 | 87 |
| 15 | 580 | 97 |
| 16 | 650 | 108 |
| 17 | 720 | 120 |
| 18 | 800 | 133 |
| 19 | 890 | 148 |
| 20 | 1,000 | 167 |
These are averages: a party that completes aspirations quickly or plays long encounters will move faster.
