Malagar the Black

Malagar the Black is one of the ancient figures of Geminaea’s history, remembered across the ages that followed. The epithet has outlived most reliable records of the person who bore it, and the accounts that remain disagree about what it first meant: the color of a banner or a robe, a mastery of dark arts, or simply a dark reputation.

Little is certain about where Malagar came from. Surviving tales tend to begin with a figure already grown and already feared or admired, and leave out an ordinary childhood.

The deeds credited to Malagar come down through fragments, carvings and songs that each favor a different side. Some cast Malagar as a conqueror or a tyrant, others as a protector who was forced into terrible choices. Scholars generally agree on one thing: Malagar changed the lands and peoples of the time enough that the name never faded.

Malagar’s name still turns up in place names, curses and children’s stories, and treasure hunters and historians alike still chase relics said to have belonged to Malagar. For many, Malagar stands as a warning about what one determined mortal can do to the world around them.
