Lyrium Blasters

Lyrium blasters are ranged weapons that use Lyrium, the solid crystalline form of Aethyr, as their source of power. They fire bursts of focused Aethyr energy, giving their wielders striking power comparable to battle magic without the need to cast a spell, and are among the more potent of Geminaea’s weapons.

A blaster holds a Lyrium crystal or a charge of Lyrium powder in a chamber built to draw its energy out in controlled bursts. Pulling the trigger releases a measured portion of that energy through a focusing barrel. Lyrium is the most stable form of Aethyr, which makes it safer to carry than more volatile fuels, though each shot still consumes part of the charge.

Lyrium blasters are carried by soldiers, guards, explorers and anyone who can afford a powerful weapon that does not depend on a spellcaster. Larger versions are mounted on vehicles and fortifications.

Lyrium is rare and valuable, and mining it is central to many economies, so blasters and their charges are costly. They are most common where Lyrium is mined or traded, and their sale is often watched closely by authorities.

Even stable Lyrium can be dangerous when mishandled. A cracked chamber or an agitated crystal can explode with chaotic Aethyr, harming the wielder and everyone nearby.
