Sail Ships

Sail ships are seagoing and river vessels driven by the wind. They are the oldest form of long-distance transport still in wide use, and even in an age of airships and shuttles they carry a great share of the bulk trade along the coasts and rivers of both planets.

A sail ship catches the wind in canvas sails rigged to masts and is steered by rudder and crew. Many modern ships add Aethyr-powered fittings, such as pumps, winches, lamps or navigation instruments, but the wind remains their main source of motion, which keeps them cheap to run.

Sail ships carry grain, timber, ore and trade goods between ports, support fishing fleets and serve as warships. Which ports and seafaring peoples matter most is left to the pages of each region.

Shipyards, crews and passage can be found in almost any port town. Owning a ship is the business of merchants, guilds and coastal powers, while hiring space aboard one is within reach of ordinary travelers.

Storms, reefs, fickle currents and pirates are constant dangers, and some seas are treacherous enough that few ships attempt the crossing at all.
