The Swamps of Malagar

The Swamps of Malagar are one of the Wilds of Ravena, the untamed lands that lie beyond the moon’s great megalopolis.

The swamps are a low, waterlogged country of reed beds, black pools, sluggish channels and stands of drowned trees. Solid ground is scarce and shifts with the seasons, and paths that were safe one year may be gone the next.

The air is warm, damp and often still. Mists gather over the water at dawn and dusk, and rain is frequent.

Few people choose to live here. Those who do include fishers, herb-gatherers and recluses who know the safe ways through, along with a wealth of insects, reptiles, birds and stranger things that thrive in the wet.

Sinking mud, hidden currents and disease threaten anyone who strays from known paths. Predators lurk in the water and the reeds, and the mists make it easy to lose one’s way.

The swamps are said to hide sunken ruins, overgrown war-sites from the War of the Moon and plants valued by healers and alchemists. Gatherers and treasure hunters brave the waters for them, though not all come back.
